Headed to Joshua Tree today along some very straight, deserted roads. The campsite in Joshua tree was brilliant - loads of space and we put the tent up without fly sheet so we could hopefully see stars later.  Drove into the park and stopped at a viewpoint at 4500ft which looks over Palm Springs and the Coacachella valley, including the San Andreas Fault.  Then did a couple of hikes - one to Hall of Horrors and one to Skull Rock.  Fascinating scenery with cacti, flowers, Joshua Trees and loads of boulder piles.  Saw lots of wildlife including chipmunk, a coyote, lizards, quails and an oriole.  Back at the campsite we made a log fire to toast marshmallows and cooked on the camp stove.  Went to bed looking out of the tent roof at hundreds of stars and constellations.  Got woken by a very bright moon and also later, by coyotes howling.
