Today was a day for spectacular scenery.
Set off on the Großglockner pass at 8.15. After about 20 switchbacks (and overtaking many cyclists) reached the top and stunning views for breakfast at 2550 metres.
Drove on up to the Franz Joseph glacier. In trainers and unprepared for any kind of hiking we walked some of the way down to the lake and took the funicular back up - this was stationed where the glacier would have been in the 1960s - a very long way from the current glacier.
Saw some marmots.
Drove on a bit and had a sandwich watching golden eagles soaring over the valley below, then walked around a wild flower meadow.
Had to stop frequently going down the valley to let the brakes cool down.
Stopped in Lienz, with mountains towering over it to buy some food and carried on another scenic hour into Italy to Lago Di Braies in the Dolomites and an awesome view from our car park space for the night. There's nowhere quite like the Dolomites for dramatic scenery.
We received some very sad news today. Peter passed away peacefully at home at the incredible age of 96. We plan to take a walk around the lake in the evening and light a candle and say a prayer.
