Reluctantly left our lakefront house and set off on unpaved roads in what felt like wilderness towards East Ferry and the whale watching tour. It was the last trip of the season and we set off with low expectations however the captain said conditions were perfect - a very high tide due to the full moon, a mirror calm sea, and no sea mist.

After an hour we arrived at the feeding grounds and were amazed (and humbled) to see a pod of humpback whales at close quarters. One even breached the surface which the captain said had only happened 3 times this season. As well as this we saw porpoises, some seals, an eagle and lots of other sea birds. A truly memorable experience.

Afterwards we drove to Digby for a fish platter then to Annapolis, a town full of quaint colourful clapboard houses. Annapolis Royal was originally known as Port Royal and was the first French settlement in what is now Canada. All settlers were given a building plot, a land plot and a river bank plot where they could build a fish weir.
